What if we had it all wrong?

We go through life
as if worry
is the ultimate act of self-protection.

What a delusion!

As if sadness
is the ultimate act of loyalty.

What a delusion!

As if spotting what’s wrong with our lives
is the ultimate form of intelligence.

What a delusion!

As if bottling up our emotions
is the ultimate form of strength.

As if following a predefined,
indoctrinated way of life
is the ultimate form of discipline.

As if control
is the ultimate act of love.

As if having more is wealth,
withholding affection is victory,
anger is care,
and losing is failure.

As if we know it all.
As if we can orchestrate it all!

What delusions!

How did we get here?
How have we had it so wrong
for so long?

And yet,
we cling to these beliefs
with such zeal,
such devotion,

as if they were ancient scripture,
a guaranteed blueprint
to salvation.

Never questioning.
Never wondering.

What if the door
to everything we truly seek
lies in the opposite direction?

Where is our courage
to go against the current,
to tread a different path,
to speak to one another
before casting judgement?

***

What if worry is not protection,
but trust is?

What if sadness is not loyalty,
but gratitude is?

What if intelligence lies not in spotting what’s wrong,
but in recognising what’s right?

What if strength is not in holding our emotions captive,
but in giving them room to breathe?

What if discipline is not in following a prescribed path,
but in finding the courage to choose our own?

What if love is not control,
but freedom?

What if wealth is not in having more,
but in needing less?

What if victory is not in withholding affection,
but in giving it unconditionally?

What if care is not anger,
but understanding?

What if losing is not failure,
but another way of learning?

What if we don’t need to know it all,
or orchestrate it all?

What if we could simply
live, trust,
feel, love
and … surrender?

Perhaps the heart has known the way all along.

Perhaps we need to listen to it more.
