Chapter 1: The Weight of Arrival

Chapter 1: The Weight of Arrival

It was another sleepless night. Her mind replayed the day’s events and conversations over and over again, like the incessant loop of a broken record. To this day, she fails to understand why she, in the not-so-distant past, compulsively repeated the details of her interactions at work in her imagination. It seemed as though her brain was searching for a way out or a happier ending.

But she had never been like this before. Throughout her decade-long career in her home country, she couldn’t recall a time when she lost sleep over office politics. No one had ever described her as an overthinker or an apprehensive person. It was only after she moved to Germany and began establishing herself in the corporate world that anxiety seemed to take root.

A few months into her job search, she came across a vacancy for a “News Editor” at one of the top logistics companies in the country. She was overjoyed when they invited her for an interview – and she aced it. The interviewer, who was also the team leader she would later work closely with, beamed throughout the meeting.

She landed the job and was later told that she was, by far, the best candidate. Bursting with pride and excitement, she wanted to tell everyone about her success. Many had warned her that Germany was an incredibly competitive job market, especially for an Arab foreigner. In her community, securing a position as a cashier or bus driver was often seen as an achievement. But now, she has set foot in a massive corporation and the possibilities ahead felt endless.

Up to this point, she struggled to feel like she belonged in the new environment. Balancing her cultural identity as a Muslim woman and the reserved norms of northern Germany wasn’t easy – she constantly felt the need to prove she was worthy of acceptance.

Challenges like speaking flawless German, politely declining offers to eat pork and drink alcohol, and meticulously recycling yoghurt lids to avoid the comments of an angry neighbour were all new to her. She saw this job as an opportunity to build a fresh identity and finally feel at home. This would be her escape from the cold loneliness she so deeply feared.
